Today, Merv Tweed, Member of Parliament for Brandon—Souris, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced support for the Royal Canadian Legion Sports Foundation under the Harper Government's Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).
Our Government is supporting communities across Canada by investing in projects such as the Royal Canadian Legion Sports Foundation," said MP Tweed. "
These projects will enable the growth and long-term prosperity here in Manitoba, and across Canada."
The Harper Government's investment of $62,150 will allow the Royal Canadian Legion Sports Foundation to upgrade its complex and dormitory. Funding will enable the facility to repair its interior and exterior with: roof repairs, fire alarm upgrades, drainage improvement, new carpeting, and washroom upgrades. The project will extend the life of the facility so that it can continue to provide sports camps for the young athletes of Manitoba, Northwestern Ontario, and Saskatchewan.
The Legion Athletic Camp would not have been able to proceed so quickly to repair the roof on the Complex building without this investment by Western Economic Diversification Canada," said John Edwards, President, Royal Canadian Legion Sports Foundation. "
We depend on donations from Legion Branches and their Ladies Auxiliaries to subsidize maintenance on the buildings used for the operation of residential sports camps in July and August each year, so that fees will remain at an affordable level for our young athletes. This roof repair project is more costly that the usual annual building maintenance undertakings that they help to fund."
In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.
Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating, small- and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
