Harper Government Invests in Improvements to Melfort’s Community Infrastructure

April 09, 2013
Melfort, Saskatchewan

Today, Randy Hoback, Member of Parliament for Prince Albert, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced support for upgrades to the Melfort Northern Lights Palace community centre under the Harper Government's Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).

"Our Government is committed to creating jobs, growth and long-term prosperity in our communities across Canada," said MP Hoback. "By making investments in local infrastructure, such as the Northern Lights Palace upgrade, we are helping boost economic activity and leaving a lasting legacy of modernized community facilities for future generations."

The Harper Government's investment of $250,000 will go towards the replacement of the roof and the air exchanger at the community centre, which includes an arena and swimming pool. These upgrades will increase the building's energy efficiency and help to reduce water damage caused by leaks in the old roof.

"The City of Melfort is extremely grateful to be receiving the CIIF funding that will be applied to roof restoration at the Northern Lights Palace skating arena and swimming pool complex," said Melfort Mayor Rick Lang. "This program by the Federal Government recognizes the various special needs and challenges of smaller cities and communities across Canada. Our city applauds the Federal Government for having the foresight and vision to recognize and assist us with this much needed funding."

In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.

Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating small- and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
