March 15, 2013
Winnipeg, Manitoba

Today, Shelly Glover, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance and Member of Parliament for Saint Boniface, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced support the Glenwood Community Centre under the Harper Government's Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).

"The Glenwood Community Centre is an integral part of our community, bringing families and residents together and offering a wide range of programs and special events for people of all ages," said MP Shelly Glover. "I am proud to be part of a Government that is committed to supporting infrastructure projects like the Glenwood Community Centre. These community infrastructure investments benefit Canadian families while creating jobs and boosting economic activity."

The Harper Government's investment of $103,226 will enhance the services provided by the Glenwood Community Centre. Under the project, the beams in the arena will be sandblasted and painted, reinforcing the structural integrity of the facility.

"The Glenwood Moffat Arena has served the community for almost 40 years," said Peter Elwick, President, Glenwood Community Centre. "Volunteers have put in thousands of hours to provide a place where the community can meet. The funding of upgrades to the arena will guarantee another 40 years of faithful service."

In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.

Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating, small- and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
