Harper Government Invests in Improvements to Calgary’s Community Infrastructure

March 12, 2013
Calgary, Alberta

Today, Joan Crockatt, Member of Parliament for Calgary Centre on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced support for upgrades to the Calgary TELUS Convention Centre under the Harper Government's Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).

"I am proud to see important facilities like the Calgary TELUS Convention Centre benefit from our Government's support for community infrastructure," said MP Crockatt. "This investment will support upgrades that benefit visitors and allow the Convention Centre to continue attracting and hosting major events that boost economic activity."

The Harper Government's investment of $100,300 will assist with upgrades to the Calgary TELUS Convention Centre. Federal funding will support the replacement of the lighting system in the Macleod Hall area, increasing the efficiency of the system and reducing energy costs. These improvements will result in a better experience for visitors attending conventions and enhance performances at the Convention Centre.

"The Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund has given us the opportunity to provide and maintain our high standard of service excellence," said Marcia Lyons, General Manager of the Calgary TELUS Convention Centre. "It is a great example of how this type of partnership is beneficial to all parties involved."

In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.

Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating small- and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
