The District of Invermere is moving forward with trail and park improvements, thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada’s Economic Action Plan.

“Investing in the District of Invermere’s trails and parks will put British Columbians to work, encourage greater participation in physical activity and ensure that our community access to the essential infrastructure we need today and in the future,” said Jim Abbott, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Cooperation and Member of Parliament for Kootenay-Columbia, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification.

Funding of $191,666 will upgrade and develop 3.5 kilometres of multi-use, recreational trails identified in the District of Invermere’s Active Transport Network Plan. The trails will create safe and accessible walking, running and biking opportunities in and around Invermere. An additional investment of $102,200 will construct a double tennis court, new bleachers and dugouts, and two kilometres of paved running paths at Mount Nelson Athletic Park.

Total federal funding of $293,866 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.

“The District of Invermere is excited to receive federal support for our park and trail projects. These initiatives are exciting examples of partnership and collaboration, and will help us to put our plans and desires into full action- and in turn allow our residents to be more active,” said Mayor Gerry Taft. “Our community will enjoy the recreational and athletic opportunities provided by this funding for many generations to come”

The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
