The Economic Action Plan Invests in Northern Manitoba

February 18, 2010
Thompson, Manitoba

The Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced Government of Canada support to help strengthen economic opportunities in northern Manitoba.

Our Government is working hard for all Canadians and that’s why we need to press ahead and continue the second phase of Canada’s Economic Action Plan,” said Minister Yelich. “These projects will not only create jobs in our communities, but they also help pave the way for Canada’s future growth and prosperity.

A broad range of work will be undertaken to create and maintain jobs as well as to invest in the recreational infrastructure of the North.   Project work includes improvements to a recycling centre, building a new Friendship Centre, new equipment for a manufacturing plant, creation of a tourism centre, and clearing of a fireguard as well as improvements to recreational facilities like arenas and parks.

Government of Canada funding of $2,767,390 announced today is being provided through the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF) and the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.  This follows on previous Economic Action Plan funding announcements totaling $1,822,144 in northern Manitoba provided through the same initiatives.

CAF will provide $306 million over two years to support the most affected western Canadian communities, such as those that are heavily reliant on resource-based industries. RInC will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period.  It will provide a temporary stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.  Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) is delivering CAF and RInC in the four western provinces.
