MLA Darryl Hickie, Family Futures Executive Director Donna Strauss, and MP Randy Hoback celebrate after a funding announcement for childcare and job creation in Prince Albert.

Randy Hoback, Member of Parliament for Prince Albert, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, and Darryl Hickie, MLA for Prince Albert Carlton, on behalf of Ken Krawetz, Saskatchewan’s Deputy Premier and Minister of Education, announced funding to help Family Futures Inc. strengthen economic opportunities in Prince Albert.

Today’s announcement demonstrates our Government’s commitment to Prince Albert families,” said MP Hoback. “This project builds on our rec/ord of providing choice in childcare for parents, while creating jobs for local workers through the construction phase.

Funding will allow Family Futures Inc. to renovate new office space and childcare facilities, expanding their services from 15 to 52 childcare spaces. Office and storage rooms will be removed to facilitate an open-floor workspace, new insulation, windows and furnace will be installed and repairs done to the roof. Thirty short-term jobs will be created in construction and 14 long-term jobs will be created in the early childhood development field.

Federal funding of $325,000 is being provided through the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF) as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. The Province of Saskatchewan is providing $124,000 for space development capital and Family Futures Inc. is funding the balance for a total estimated project cost of $505,000.

The capital funding provided by the Government of Saskatchewan will help Family Futures Inc. get this new child care centre up and running, and ready to support parents, while providing high-quality early learning opportunities for children in Prince Albert,” said MLA Hickie.

Family Futures supports families so they can be successful at home, school or in their career. This project allows us to not only create additional jobs in the field of early childhood education but also to expand the number of families we are able to support,” said Donna Strauss, Executive Director, Family Futures Inc. “This would not be possible without the partnerships established in our community with all levels of government.

CAF will provide $306 million over two years to support the most affected western Canadian communities, such as those that are heavily reliant on resource-based industries. Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) is delivering the fund in the four western provinces.
