Seventeen recreation projects in Manitoba are moving forward thanks to funding from the Federal and Municipal governments.
Today, the Honourable Vic Toews, President of the Treasury Board, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, and Acting Deputy Mayor Gord Steeves, Councillor for St. Vital Ward, on behalf of Mayor Sam Katz, City of Winnipeg, announced funding for projects that will create jobs in Manitoba.
“Today’s announcement will have a positive impact on many communities in Manitoba,
” said Minister Toews. “The funding from the Recreational Infrastructure Canada program is not only creating immediate jobs, but is also improving the places where communities gather.
”
Funding of $1,036,238 is provided through the RInC program as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. The City of Winnipeg is contributing $223,000 to these projects.
The projects announced today range in scope from expansion of a community garden, to renovations for a seniors centre and sports facilities in Winnipeg, to completion of a school playground, rehabilitation of recreation centres, and making a recreation area wheelchair accessible in rural Manitoba.
"Recreational Infrastructure in Winnipeg was neglected for far too long and I am proud that we are reinvesting projects that are the building blocks of safe and healthy communities,
" said Councillor Steeves. "I want to thank the federal government for its commitment to improving quality of life for all Winnipeggers.
"
The RInC program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities. A total of almost $153 million in RInC funding will be invested across the four western provinces. Western Economic Diversification Canada is delivering the program in Western Canada.
