The Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of International Trade, Minister of the Asia Pacific Gateway and Member of Parliament for Okanagan – Coquihalla, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, today announced Government of Canada support to three projects to strengthen economic opportunities in the Okanagan – Southern Interior region of British Columbia.

The Government of Canada, through the Community Adjustment Fund, is providing a timely, targeted stimulus to western Canadian communities, reducing the impacts of the global recession,” said MP Stockwell Day.  “These projects will create jobs and maintain employment, helping our communities overcome the challenges currently facing our region.

Federal funding of $3,685,750 is being provided through the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF) as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. The projects include a training centre, an industrial park and an innovative forestry replanting project.

A part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF) is a two-year, $1 billion national program that is providing an economic stimulus by supporting projects that create jobs and maintain employment in rural communities.

The fund will provide $306 million over two years to support the most affected western Canadian communities, such as those that are heavily reliant on resource-based industries, for instance forestry, mining, agriculture and fisheries, and communities that depend on the manufacturing industry. Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) is delivering the fund in the four western provinces.

  1. Osoyoos Indian Band:  The Osoyoos Indian Band is receiving $2.7million to develop the Senkulmen Enterprise Park. Work activities include the construction of a highway intersection, road works and paths, the installation of a sanitary system and waterworks, the installation of utilities and street lights, the development of an entry feature and the incorporation of core environmental protection elements. This new park will provide significant economic growth opportunities to the Osoyoos Indian Band, to the area surrounding Oliver and to southern British Columbia.
  2. CSQ Environmental Technologies Ltd:  CSQ Environmental Technologies is receiving $585,750 to establish a 10 hectare "hybrid poplar" root stock planting bed in Princeton, and construct a small nursery in Abbotsford, B.C. The project involves growing and harvesting high-yield trees—hybrid poplars that "regrow" from the root stock after harvesting. The harvested crop is converted into cuttings for soil remediation work, or placed into a nursery to create "plugs" for planting in afforestation or reforestation projects.
  3. Okanagan School of the Arts:  The Okanagan School of the Arts is receiving $400,000 to create a training and entrepreneurial employment centre to foster employability and skills development through the arts. The project will employ skilled instructors, construction workers, administrators and youth in the short term. The new centre will offer programming, training for residents in the entire South Okanagan Region. This project will build on existing business and entrepreneurial training initiatives offered through the Okanagan School of the Arts.
