Residents of the Town of Dundurn, RM of Dundurn and Resort Villages of Thode and Shields will benefit from joint federal and provincial funding to improve the reliability and performance of the wastewater collection and treatment system, announced today by the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification and Member of Parliament for Blackstrap. This project is just one example of the commitment of both governments to strengthening the Saskatchewan economy by reducing red tape, creating jobs for Saskatchewan people, and getting shovels in the ground sooner.
This project will construct new local facilities and create local jobs, at a time when the need for economic stimulus is greatest.
"Today's announcement is another example of how our governments are acting with leadership to accelerate infrastructure funding for Saskatchewan," said Minister of State Yelich. "By working together, we were able to accomplish significant and positive changes for our four communities and our province.”
“Our government is committed to ensure the infrastructure needs of Saskatchewan towns, cities and rural municipalities are met,” said Greg Brkich, MLA for Arm River-Watrous. “Through our government’s recently announced $500 million ‘economic booster shot,’ and the further $1 billion investment in infrastructure that will be contained in the upcoming provincial budget, and today’s announcement, we are taking the necessary steps to ensure the Saskatchewan economy stays strong.”
The governments of Canada and Saskatchewan will each invest up to $3,040,333 in the project. Dundurn and Area will contribute the balance of the total eligible project cost of up to $9,121,000. The project involves constructing a new three-cell lagoon and centralized collection and force main system to manage the wastewater from the Town of Dundurn, R.M. of Dundurn, and resort villages of Thode and Shields, located near an environmentally sensitive watershed.
“The R.M. of Dundurn is indeed proud to participate in this project. These are very exciting times in our communities with the opportunities for new development to coincide with the current development taking place. The funding for this project will help secure much needed expansion of infrastructure to meet our needs for the future,” said Fred Wilson, Reeve of the R.M. of Dundurn. “I commend our partners the Town of Dundurn and the Resort Villages of Shields & Thode for their cooperation to help move this project forward and to our Senior Governments for making the funding of this program possible and BCF for their support of our project.”
This project is one of 46 projects across the province that will break ground quickly thanks to a joint federal-provincial investment of $63 million. Together with municipal contributions, the total investment in local infrastructure improvements in Saskatchewan during this first intake exceeds $95 million. The governments of Canada and Saskatchewan have taken steps to get shovels in the ground and to flow money faster for targeted infrastructure projects in Saskatchewan communities in the 2009 and 2010 construction seasons.
