The Canada-Alberta Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (CAMRIF) was designed to address local infrastructure needs in urban and rural Alberta. It ensures all Albertans, whether they live in large, small or remote communities, share in the benefits of infrastructure investments.
Through the fund, the Government of Canada has worked in partnership with the Province of Alberta to invest in local infrastructure projects. These projects are vital to sustaining strong economic growth and quality of life in Canadian communities.
A minimum of 55 per cent of funding under CAMRIF targeted “green infrastructure
” projects that contribute to community economic development and environmental quality of life. These include water, wastewater, solid waste, municipal energy improvements and public transit. This fund has also invested in cultural, tourism and recreational infrastructure, local roads and broadband connectivity.
The Agreement provided $107M in federal funding for municipal infrastructure renewal, reflecting shared federal and provincial priorities. Federal funding has been matched by the province and municipalities, for total program funding of $321M.
At least 80 per cent of CAMRIF funding has been dedicated to rural municipalities with a population of less than 250,000. The remaining 20 per cent was made available to urban municipalities with a population greater than 250,000.
Since its launch in the spring of 2006, all of the CAMRIF program funding has been allocated to support more than 80 diverse infrastructure projects. Following this success program, a new federal infrastructure plan, Building Canada Fund - Communities Component, has been introduced. The Government of Canada and the Government of Alberta have committed to continue working together to deliver funding for modern, high-quality public infrastructure in the Province of Alberta.
