Western Canada Shipbuilding Summit

Western Economic Diversification Canada and Seaspan Marine Corporation jointly hosted the Western Canada Shipbuilding Summit on Wednesday, May 23, 2012, in Vancouver, BC.

The objective of the Summit was to bring together key stakeholders under the National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy with western Canadian industry to share information about the Strategy and the opportunities it represents.

The Summit marked an important step in the implementation of Western Canada's Shipbuilding Action Plan. The Action Plan is designed to help western Canadian industry take advantage of opportunities presented by the National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy.

The event included opening remarks by Andrew Saxton, Member of Parliament for North Vancouver and Parliamentary Secretary to the President of the Treasury Board and for Western Economic Diversification and welcoming remarks by Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, and included presentations by:

Summit Participation

More than 600 participants representing more than 360 organizations from across Canada and around the world attended the Summit, 320 of which are located in Western Canada.

Shipbuilding Association of Canada: The Shipbuilding Association of Canada exists to promote the interests of the shipbuilding, ship repair and industrial marine industry. The Association is national in scope with members from across Canada.

National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy Secretariat: This website provides information about the National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy including a description of the Strategy’s elements, details of the selection process, a chronology of events and key milestones in the process, responses to frequently asked questions and links to other relevant information.

Public Works and Government Services Canada, Office of Small and Medium Enterprises: The Office of Small and Medium Enterprises (OSME) within Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC) supports SMEs by working to reduce barriers and by simplifying requirements for SMEs that want to do business with the Government of Canada. This section of PWGSC’s website provides an overview of the OSME and resources for SMEs.

Industry Canada, Industrial and Regional Benefits: This website details how the IRB Policy works and how Canadian companies can benefit.

Government of British Columbia, Ministry of Finance: This website provides information related to the Government of British Columbia’s Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Tax Credit for employers and apprentices.

Lloyd’s Register Canada Ltd.: Lloyd’s Register Canada Ltd. provides independent assurance to companies operating high-risk, capital-intensive assets in the energy and transportation sectors, with a view to creating safe, responsible and sustainable supply chains. This website contains information about the expert advice provided by Lloyd’s and the sectors served by the organization.

British Columbia Shipbuilding and Repair Workforce Table: The goal of the British Columbia Shipbuilding and Repair Workforce Table is to ensure that the shipbuilding and repair sector in British Columbia will have the right number of workers, with the right skills, in the right places, and at the right time to enable the expansion and enhanced competitiveness of the entire sector.

Irving Shipbuilding Inc.: Irving Shipbuilding Inc. (ISI) has established an online supplier registry, through which organizations can tell ISI about their goods and services.

Seaspan Marine Corporation Supplier Registration: Seaspan Marine Corporation (Seaspan) has established an online registration portal whereby organizations can make Seaspan aware of the goods and services they offer.

Western Economic Diversification Canada: Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) works to create jobs and economic growth for Western Canada. By promoting new economic opportunities, WD is securing a more diverse and prosperous future for the West while advancing western interests at the national level.
